Gogglebox viewers criticise ‘traumatising’ episode which shows baby kangaroo being killed

Gogglebox viewers are urging producers to stop showing animals being killed on the show after watching scenes dubbed ‘traumatising’.

On Friday’s episode of the hit family show, the stars of the Channel 4 programme were shown a baby kangaroo being chased and then killed.

Veteran Gogglebox stars Ellie and Izzi, the sisters from Leeds, screamed at the TV as they watched it happen.

Izzi exclaimed: ‘Oh no the baby’s going to fall out, don’t fall out!’ While her sister Ellie shouted: ‘Oh my God, go back for it!’

Fans expressed their shock on Twitter, with some saying they were ‘traumatised’ and others pleading with the show’s bosses to stop showing scenes of this nature.

One shocked viewer said: ‘We didn’t need to see the kangaroo bit.’

‘Getting fed up of animals being killed or eaten with no warning!!!! It’s not entertainment,’ someone else remarked.

Another viewer said that they ‘don’t get if it gets entertaining reactions’, urging Gogglebox to ‘stop showing really upsetting nature documentaries of poor animals being killed’.

Gogglebox has made individuals including Scarlett Moffatt, Jenny Newby and Pete Sandiford household names since it launched in 2013.

Viewers have speculated in the past that Gogglebox stars get paid in takeaways, as (particularly in earlier series) they seemed to be eating them all the time.

However, they do indeed receive a fee, as each family is paid £1,500 per month, The Sun claimed.

The families in Gogglebox have to watch 12 hours of TV a week for the show.

That is split into two six-hour shifts, allowing most participants to hold down their day jobs around filming.

In the space of eight years, Gogglebox has become a beloved staple in British television, which was made even more apparent during the Covid-19 pandemic with an astonishing rise in viewing figures.

Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
