“Next Year He’ll Probably Retire” – Leon Edwards Says We May Never See Jorge Masvidal in the UFC Again

UFC 269 is now getting closer by the day, and fans are more excited than ever. The card will see the likes of Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, and Amanda Nunes take to the octagon. Sadly, the scheduled fight between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards for UFC 269 will not take place as “Gamebred” withdrew due to an undisclosed injury. 

As Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards have had a bitter rivalry for quite some time, fight fans are pretty bummed out that they won’t get to see the conclusion to the “three-piece and a soda” incident.

Recently the third-ranked welterweight contender, Leon Edwards appeared in an interview with ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto and discussed Jorge Masvidal’s withdrawal from UFC 269. 

When questioned about his thoughts on if he’ll ever face Jorge Masvidal following his withdrawal, ‘Rocky’ responded,” I don’t believe so, I don’t believe. I’m going up, he’s going that way (down). So, I can’t see when it’s going to be a time where the fight makes sense. I’m going to keep winning. I’m going on to world championships and competing at a higher level. He’s declining now, so it’s gonna be difficult now for us to get into a position where the fight makes sense but, we’ll see”

The Brit added, “I’m focusing on being a world champion. Focusing, achieving my goal, you know. He’s doing what he’s doing, and I feel he’ll probably retire, though. Next year he’ll probably retire, that’s how I feel.”

What’s next for Leon Edwards?

Since his longtime rival Masvidal backed off from their upcoming fight, fans have been trying to guess who Leon Edwards will be fighting next. In his interview with Brett Okamoto, he said he’d be willing to fight at UFC 269 if the fight made sense. 

Khamzat Chimaev could be a potential opponent for Edwards if UFC doesn’t give him a title shot in his next fight. ‘Borz’ is currently on a winning streak as well and is looking to fight as soon as he can. If the fight makes “sense” to Edwards, this might go down next year. However, ‘Rocky’ may not want to fight someone ranked way lower than him. 

As he sits at #3 in the welterweight rankings, Leon Edwards is next for a title shot as both men above him (Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington) failed in the quest for the title against Kamaru Usman.

Hence, 2022 could see ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ defend his belt against Leon Edwards.
