‘I Broke it Before the Fight’- Kamaru Usman Says He Was Injured Right Before Colby Covington Fight

UFC welterweight kingpin Kamaru Usman made an appearance on the Full Send podcast and dropped a shocking revelation about his most recent fight. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ revealed that he entered into his title fight against Colby Covington at UFC 268 with a broken hand. He said that he suffered the break in training camp, three weeks before the fight.

Considering the way in which Usman managed to perform, this news certainly comes as a shock to fans. He held his own against ‘Chaos’ Covington and even managed to drop him multiple times in the second round. Suffering a major break to his right hand in training would have definitely impacted the way he trained in the final weeks of camp.

“I broke it before the fight. Most people didn’t know that so. I broke it three weeks before and I didn’t throw it a day until the fight itself.”

“I didn’t throw it until right at the backstage, you know when you’re warming up for the fight. I didn’t throw my hands for three weeks, my right hand. I broke it on someone’s head, Justin Gaethje’s head.”

Has Kamaru Usman surpassed the great Georges St-Pierre?

Some fans in the MMA community have already labeled Usman as the greatest welterweight fighter of all time. However, with names like Matt Hughes and Georges St-Pierre having reigned over the division, it’s hard to crown Usman the welterweight GOAT just yet.

St-Pierre accrued nine title defenses, was a multiple-time world champion, had avenged every loss he’s ever suffered and was a two-division champion. While Kamaru Usman is certainly on his way, he is yet to grace the lofty heights of GSP’s career. With a move up to middleweight and a couple more title defenses under his belt, it will be hard to deny ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’.

Kamaru Usman is certainly on top of his game currently and has been consistently taking on top fighters. He has already defended his belt three times this year and has put his stamp on the welterweight division. 2022 could be a crucial year to dictate how far Kamaru Usman goes from here on out.
