Joel Embiid on Recent Illness: “I Really Thought I Wasn’t Going to Make It. It Was That Bad.”

The Philadelphia 76ers possess an exciting young team led by talisman Joel Embiid. Embiid has remained at the heart of the franchise’s NBA season campaigns. The 27-year-old Cameroonian has received three All-NBA Second Team call-ups. Embiid recently returned to the 76ers lineup from a significant setback.

Joel Embiid had recently been absent from the 76ers lineup because of contracting the COVID-19 virus. In a post-game conference, while speaking to the media, Embiid described his experiences of battling the virus. Embiid also mentioned his delight at returning to NBA action.

Embiid said, “That jawn hit me hard. I mean, I really thought I wasn’t going to make it. It was, it was that bad. So I am just thankful to be you know sitting here. You know, yeah, I struggled with it. But I’m just glad that I got over it. And I am just here, just doing what I love, and you know, with some good people.”

During Embiid’s absence of nine NBA games, the 76erslost eight of those NBA games. Embiid’s last game before contracting COVID-19 took place against the Chicago Bulls. Embiid scored 18 points, seven assists, and nine rebounds in 34 minutes for the 76ers against the Bulls. He led the 76ers to a 103-98 win over the Bulls.

Embiid started his NBA career in 2014 with the Philadelphia 76ers as the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. However, he made his debut for the 76ers only after two seasons in 206-17 due to multiple foot and knee injuries. The four-time NBA All-Star refers to himself with the nickname, ‘The Process’.
