Games Inbox: Video game Cyber Monday deals, Far Cry 6 deals, and Cyberpunk 2077 reputation

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – unlikely to get any cheaper today (pic: Sony)

The Monday Inbox discusses the early Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City reviews, as another reader is upset at the Uncharted 4 remaster.

Sale must end
Not a bad Black Friday in the end, even if there wasn’t really any console deals. Although I don’t think anyone sensible was really expecting that. I picked up Demon’s Souls, Returnal, and Guardians Of the Galaxy for almost half price on all of them and I’m pretty happy with that.

I’d still be interesting in picking up Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart if I can get it cheap on Cyber Monday but I don’t ever remember deals getting better after Black Friday, just most of them carrying on till Monday and a few days after. If I see it for £40 though I might bite the bullet, as I don’t see Sony lowering the price any further (it’s currently £52 on the PlayStation Store).

It’d be nice if there was a decent Xbox One S deal but all I’ve seen are bundles with games I don’t particularly want. Which is worse because bundles for Xbox consoles don’t really make sense anymore, considering Games Pass is all you really need. We’ll see though, I’ll still be keeping my eyes open.

The tipping point
I saw Far Cry 6 in the Black Friday sales, and I imagine it’ll still be around for Cyber Monday, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to pull the trigger on it. I know it reviewed okay but the main problem is that it’s more of the same, and I’m not sure I do want more. I’ve enjoyed the previous games but I have to admit that 3, 4, and 5 were all basically the same game in a different setting, and so apparently is 6.

I guess the question is how many times can that happen before it’s too much? Is 6 the limit? 7? 8? I really don’t know. All I know is that the fake Cuban setting doesn’t really interest me but the bad guy being played by Giancarlo Esposito does.

I’m sure it’s a question many readers have asked themselves about a long-running series. It seems this year was the tipping point for many when it came to Call Of Duty, so where is it for Far Cry? It could be number 6 as it doesn’t seem to have done that great (it is in the sales after all) but I dunno, those map icons are kind of calling to me…

Damaged goods
The Reader’s Feature about Cyberpunk 2077 at the weekend took the words out of my mouth. CD Projekt took their chance and they were rightly punished for it. What they were expecting people to pay for at launch was disgusting and I’m glad that Sony took such a hard line with them about it.

The worst thing though, which the Reader’s Feature didn’t really get into, is that it’s not even that great a game. Having played it on PC it’s okay, but it’s nowhere close to as good as The Witcher 3. Even if you ignore the gameplay factors the story and characters just aren’t as interesting. I didn’t want to be around any of them in particular and the ending is very abrupt.

It’s not a terrible game, when it works, but it’s certainly not a great one and CD Projekt should get use to that reputation because nothing’s going to change it without some major DLC. Personally, I’d rather they just cut their losses and get on with The Witcher 4. Cyberpunk is damaged goods as far as I’m concerned.

Double trouble
I’m on board (ha ha!) with the idea of a Mass Effect show, it obviously lends itself to long-form storytelling much more than to film.

It would make sense to avoid Shepard entirely. For me, the universe around them and the cultures in it were always the most interesting aspect of the games. And the interactions with the crew and others, but you don’t need to have the same characters to do that.

But if they do go down the Shepard route, do they go with male or female Shep? Well, how about both? I say just have Shepard twins! Maybe they could have been separated at birth, each being left with half of the same medallion. A medallion which could, when made whole, turn out to be Prothean tech.

You know it makes sense!*

GC: As a compromise, how about just female Shepard?

Unwelcome reviews
It’s not out in the UK until next week but I’ve been looking at the American reviews for Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City and, well… apparently it’s exactly what it looks like: low budget schlock with terrible actors and a confusing story because, for some reason, they decided to combine Resident Evil 1 and 2 into one film.

It is apparently much closer to the games than the earlier films, as you can tell from the trailers, but the reviews still don’t seem to think it’s scary or anything. Not much of a surprise I suppose, but I guess we’ll have to wait until the next reboot for a film that is both accurate and good.

Apparently it’s likely to make profit though, given how cheap it is and the actors are all nobodies, so I guess they’ll probably try to do Resident Evil 3 next (why wasn’t that one combined with 2?) or maybe skip ahead to Resident Evil 4. Since they’ve already got Leon’s hair wrong though, I really don’t see the point.

Investor relations
I’ve just been reading about Cyberpunk 2077 and how an extremely optimistic Adam Kiciński thinks it’s going to be remembered as a good game. I don’t think so somehow.

What I’m writing in about though is the part about shareholders launching a class action lawsuit because of money they lost over the whole thing.

So how is that going to work? Apart from the rumours at the time that part of the reason it was released before it was ready was because of pressure from investors, isn’t any sort of investment inherently risky?

My limited understanding of the stock market is that investors can lose money just as easily, if not easier, as they can make money.

So how do they have a leg to stand on in taking CD Projekt Red to court over loss of profits? I don’t understand.

PS: I’ve just seen that a site called PSU.com has the Little Devil Inside being released on the 31st December 2021. The only article I can find on their site is from 27th October about a State of Play trailer but says there’s is no date. I’ve also done a quick Google search and nothing supports a December 2021 release date for it. And it’s not in the GC release schedule either, so it can’t be true what they are saying right?

GC: No game would ever launch on New Year’s Eve. In any case, Little Devil Inside is down as a 2022 release. As for Cyberpunk 2077, the investors claim they were deceived about the game’s initial launch, and that CD Projekt claimed there were only a few bugs that wouldn’t cause any problems. Naturally, CD Projekt denies that.

Missing from the list
Completely agree with the Reader’s Feature about Resident Evil Village at the weekend and the fact that The Game Awards is already a joke. Forza Horizon 5 and Returnal are better than any of the games that have actually be nominated and so too is Monster Hunter Rise.

Rise is considerably better than Monster Hunter: World and yet because it’s on Switch it seems to have been completely overlooked, whereas World got plenty of nominations. To be honest I question how much the people voting really know about games if this is the consensus. Do they think Rise and World are the same game?

Bad guy decision
I wonder if Sony might end up cancelled the Uncharted 4 remaster or cutting the price or something. They must see all this publicity and realise that releasing it for full price, or anything close to it, is a bad idea. As everyone has said, why does that game get turned into something you have to pay for and others get free upgrades? Upgrades that don’t suddenly take away all the multiplayer modes.

There’s no suggestion from Sony that they’re doing anything but upping the resolution and frame rate so why is it being treated differently? There’s not even anything obvious that could be done to the game, since it was already a technical marvel as it was.

Yes, I bought the original but despite loving every minute of it I have no interest in paying for it for a second time just because Sony thinks they can squeeze a bit more money out of it. I get that they can’t afford to run their own Games Pass but if they’re not going to do that they’ve got to keep fans on side and feel like the good guys. This is not doing that.

I played SOMA, wow that game is very disturbing and great. The story is amazing and perplexing, the best game I’ve played in a long time. A very thoughtful, mind-bending experience, are frictional games still going. I like games like that, I loved the story.

Nice interview with the GamesMaster guy, GC. I watched it afterwards and it is pretty funny. I still don’t get the hour long time though. Wouldn’t it have been better to just chop it up into six episodes?

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Straybe, who asks what’s the best acting performance you’ve ever seen in a video game?

Even if you don’t know the name of the actor involved what character do you think is the best acted in terms of the voice and/or motion capture performance? What was their best scene (please try to avoid spoilers) and how do you think it compares to a performance in live action media?

How much do you tend to notice good or bad acting in a video game and how important is it to you enjoying a game? Also, are there any that were bad enough to put you off an otherwise good game?
