Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden has explained that she was missing from this weekend’s show due to being admitted to hospital for her Crohn’s disease.

The professional dancer revealed that her celebrity dance partner Tom Fletcher was on hand to look after her and welcomed her into his family home with his wife Giovanna and their three sons.

Amy thanked Tom and Giovanna for giving her all the love and care and revealed that she is on the road to recovery.

Sharing a carousel of pictures on her Instagram, including a selfie from a hospital bed, she wrote: ‘Thanks for the all messages over the weekend. Unfortunately, I was missing from the show as I had an unexpected Crohn’s flare up and hospital admission in which I received unbelievable care.

‘I’m recovering very well and certainly being well looked after and look forward to returning to the dance floor.

‘Big thanks to lovely @saradaviescc and @tomfletcher for taking care of me (of all the days to be poorly, Ben was in Blackpool with the dance school).’

Amy continued: ‘To the Fletchers who made sure I had everything and more at the hospital, have brought me back to theirs where the whole family are giving me all the love, care, burnt toast (Tom), unlimited supply of @mrsgifletcher clothes along with @tomfletcher sock choice😜 you could possibly need, lots of drawings and pretend injections from my new doctors Buzz, Buddy and Max.

‘Thank you, they really were sent to me.’

Amy’s Strictly co-stars flooded her with well wishes, with Katya Jones writing: ‘You meet people for a reason!!! I’m so glad they were there to look after you Amy!! 🙌 love you lots, recover soon.’

Dianne Buswell added: ‘Love you so much.’

Crohn’s disease is a lifelong condition where parts of the digestive system become inflamed. It causes pain, fatigue, difficulty digesting food and frequent trips to the toilet, among other symptoms.

Strictly Come Dancing’s quarter-final is due to take place this weekend, with Rhys Stephenson, Dan Walker, John Whaite, Rose Ayling-Ellis and AJ Odudu.
