Texas Rangers, New York Mets Lead as Top MLB Free Agent Spenders; Yankees Nowhere in Sight

The $5 Billion worth franchise, New York Yankees, have spent nothing on the free agency market this off-season. Expected to be the front runners in free agency, the Yankees are not even in the top 10 spenders this year.

Interestingly, Texas Rangers and Yankees’ rival in New York, the Mets are leading the race. Notably, with many other teams debiting their accounts, some top players are out of Yankees’ reach now.

New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, not in the top ten

The Texas Rangers swooped in on Monday night to sign the top shortstop on market, Corey Seager, for a million-dollar deal. Rangers have made an agreement worth $325 million with the former Dodgers star for 10 years. The Mets, too, have been on a crazy spending spree, signing one deal after another.

The Rangers top the MLB free agent spending list, as they have debited $561.2 million to date. Notably, they are followed by the New York Mets, who have spent $254 million. Others in the top five are Toronto Blue Jays ($121 million), Seattle Mariners ($115 million), and Detroit Tigers ($77 million).

Ranking from 6 to 10 on the charts are Houston Astros ($67 million), Miami ($53 million), Los Angeles Angels(45 million), St. Louis Cardinals ($44 million), and San Francisco Giants ($36 million), accordingly.

Shockingly, top teams like New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers did not make it to the top ten positions.

Billions already spent, while top players still not signed

Excluding the Corey Seager-Texas Rangers deal, the teams have so far spent over $1 billion. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, teams have committed over $1.1 billion after Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray’s deals.

Interestingly, the World Series star, Freddie Freeman, and top shortstop Carlos Correa are yet to sign a contract. Other notable names still available are Trevor Story, Baez, Bryant, Castellanos, Stroman, Suzuki, Rodon, Iglesias, Kershaw, Taylor, Schwarber, and Conforto.
