Sam Thompson drops massive hint he’s set to propose to Zara McDermott

Wedding bells are on the horizon according to Sam (Picture: Anthony Harvey/REX/Shutterstock)

Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson, 29, on being a skilled prankster, gaming to help his ADHD condition, and starting a family with girlfriend Zara McDermott.

You’ve been recruited by Elves Behavin’ Badly. Tell us a bit about the Christmas campaign…

The idea is to bring some fun and cheeky, good-natured mischief to Christmas. I give my top 10 pranks and we’re asking the public to get in touch with us at Elves Behavin’ Badly and let us know their Christmas pranks. I’m a prankster and it’s nice to have a hub of places where I can hone my craft.

What’s your favourite prank?

I fill a cupboard to the brim with Rice Krispies — you need quite a few boxes to make this work. Then I seal it shut with some sticky tape.

My girlfriend opens the door and all the Rice Krispies fall on her! It’s really fun to behold. For me, that is, I’m not sure for Zara [Love Island’s Zara McDermott].

Do your pranks involve a lot of mess?

A few do. Another one involves putting baking soda into a bottle of ketchup. It fizzes up and when you open the top it’s one hell of a mess. I did that one on my girlfriend.

And she’s still your girlfriend?

Just about! I prank her quite a lot but I might need to take a little break. Her reaction at the start was, ‘That’s quite funny,’ but it’s beginning to get to the point of, ‘Will you grow up?’

We’ve been together for more than two years and she says, ‘If we’re going to be having kids and getting married, you’re going to have to change.’ I tell her, ‘I’m sorry, this is the guy you’re in love with. This is how it’s going to be.’

Will you be settling down?

Wedding bells are definitely on the horizon and I think we’ll have children in the not too distant future. I’m about to become an uncle very soon.

I’m looking forward to that and honing my skills as a budding parent with my nephew.

What difference did Made In Chelsea make to your life?

I was 20 when I joined. Doing it from such a young age meant I practically grew up on TV. I’d never had a girlfriend before it. I wasn’t the best-looking guy, so I hadn’t even dated anyone, and I had all those experiences for the first time on TV.

I went through my first break-up and I cheated on someone for the first time, which was horrible because it was in the public eye. Nine years on, though, it’s like my second home.

Why did you join?

To get into nightclubs for free and get dates. I’ve now got a girlfriend, who hopefully is a ‘forever girlfriend’, so I suppose it worked. I’m not on the show now. I’ve no problems with going back for a little scene occasionally but there are some amazing youngsters on there now and my life would be relatively boring compared to a lot of them.

Do you live in Chelsea?

I’m doing up a house in Fulham and we’re moving in soon. It was my house but we’ve ripped the whole thing out and it’s definitely got more of a Zara touch to it now.

How are you spending Christmas?

My mother’s house went up in flames a few weeks ago so she’s out of the home now while they rebuild it. We were going to be at hers for Christmas so we’re scrambling to get our house ready so she can come and stay with us for Christmas.

Your poor mum…

The house didn’t burn down but there was a fire and a lot of damage done, which is going to take a lot of time to fix.

You’ve appeared in a few other reality shows. Which was your favourite?

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins was probably the best experience I’ve ever had. I got to the final. I like to do things that are fun and if someone came along with another show that was a good fit, that would be great. I’d obviously say yes to I’m A Celebrity.

What’s coming up next?

I’m on series two of the show I wrote with Pete Wicks called Pete And Sam’s Reality News on E4. It’s a gossipy, jokey news channel. There’s another couple of shows we’re pitching and a couple of businesses starting soon.

How do you unwind?

I’m quite the gamer. I’ve got ADHD and gaming helps me mentally. I struggle to switch off — hence all the pranks. Sometimes it’s quite hard but I could never meditate because my mind is always going in a million directions. Gaming is like meditation to me.

Has anyone ever played a trick on you?

Zara got me recently. We were doing a Zoom interview for a TV show and we were being interviewed by a journalist. Little did I know that Zara had some fart spray.

The smell was really bad, to the point where I had to excuse myself to go and be sick. Only then did I realise it was all a hoax and the journalist was actually an actor! It was very well worked. I was actually quite proud of Zara.
