Devin Haney’s Amateur Boxing Background, Including Loss to Ryan Garcia

Devin Haney is one of those few boxers who possesses a stellar pro-boxing stint. Right from his debut until today, Haney has shown his enigmatic fighting abilities. Also, with packed offense and defense, ‘The Dream’ has outclassed every pro-boxing adversary to eventually become the WBC lightweight king. But things weren’t the same while he was an amateur a few years ago.

Just like any other boxing prodigy, Haney took up many amateur bouts. In those, he looked for the tiniest of improvements every time. He definitely got his fruits of success on the pro-side, but he certainly didn’t exhibit a stupendous amateur stint.

What is Devin Haney’s amateur boxing record?

Haney possessed a 27-6 amateur boxing record. Moreover, none of his wins came in via T/KO or finishes. Also, none of his losses came in via T/KO.

Did Devin Haney lose to Ryan Garcia?

In his second amateur bout, Haney locked horns with his current rival, Ryan Garcia. ‘King Ry’ ended up scoring a win over Haney in this fight. However, this didn’t leave ‘The Dream’ in jeopardy. Instead, he improved and went ahead to win some notable bouts, to eventually meet Garcia in the ring again in 2014.

This time, the duo collided for the USA Junior National Championships Final, where Haney turned the tables and won via a UD. But, in the same year, he again faced Garcia and lost the bout. A year later, the duo met again for one final time. In this tussle, ‘The Dream’ claimed the victory.

When did Devin Haney turn pro?

Haney turned into a pro-boxer in 2015. After that, he never looked back. While he appeared under the big lights on the pro-side, nobody expected him to trace such a decorated pathway in such a short span of time.

However, Haney had his purpose set, and he only got better with every fight. As of now, he has a 26-0 record, with 15 T/KO wins.

As ‘The Dream’ is just 23, he has a lot of time to improve and achieve even more accolades. Do you envision Haney going down as the best lightweight?
