Lorraine Kelly has said she ‘doesn’t understand’ why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for an interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

The no-holds-barred interview is set to air in America on March 7 on CBS.

On Tuesday’s episode of her show, Lorraine sat down with royal correspondent Russell Myers to get his take on the TV appearance.

Lorraine asked if Prince Harry and Meghan, who is pregnant with their second child, will decide not to do any further interviews after their sit down with Oprah.

She said: ‘We’ll find out at the weekend – do you think when they’ve done it they would have got it all off their chest, said what they need to say, and then they can maybe not do any more?’

The host added: ‘I don’t understand why they’re doing it anyway.’

Russell replied: ‘This has been running for well over a year, like with the ITV documentary, they could have let sleeping dogs lie there. I don’t understand what they think they were going to gain out of it.

‘They were permitted to leave the royal family which is what they wanted. They wanted to keep their titles and patronages which have been taken away from them because they’re not working members of the family.’

He continued: ‘The history is there with these sorts of TV programmes and interviews. They never end well, do they?’

Russell used the examples of Princess Diana’s now infamous BBC interview in 1995 and Prince Andrew’s appearance on Newsnight in 2019 as ‘a disaster waiting to happen’.

Lorraine’s comments come after her ITV Daytime colleague Piers Morgan labelled the Harry and Meghan’s TV appearance as ‘crass beyond belief’.

‘I’m sorry, people know my views and I find it utterly nauseating,’ Piers added.

‘I think it’s going to be extremely bad for this country. I think it’s going to be fascinating how hard Oprah will go.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
