No QB Controversy: Philadelphia Eagles HC Nick Sirianni to Start Jalen Hurts When Healthy

The Philadelphia Eagles sealed an all-important win against the New York Jets on Sunday. However, their starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts, missed all the action on week 13. Hurts had been listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game and have been restricted in practice all week. Subsequently, he was classified as inactive on Sunday.

However, the backup QB Gardner Minshew did not disappoint on his spell. He completed 20 of 25 pass attempts covering 242 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Nick Sirianni bashes rumors on Jalen Hurts

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni felt confident with the team’s performance as they head to a late-season bye week. During his post-game conference when asked about Jalen Hurts, the coach said, “He wasn’t healthy enough to play. We thought he was getting better, and we’re just always going to put the player’s health first and foremost, and so he just wasn’t healthy enough to play.”

Following this, the reporters emphasized if he thought Jalen would be the quarterback moving forward. Sirianni quickly replied, “of course”.

To which he further added, “I think he’s played good football. I think he’s played really good football. There’s been times that he’s been one of the best in the league with the way he’s moved around, made plays. We look at that quarterback rating and what he’s had there, and so he’s played really good football when he’s in, so when he’s healthy and he’s back, he’ll be our starter.”

Philadelphia Eagles on benching Jalen Hurts

The Eagles currently secure the third spot in the NFC East division with a 6-7 record so far. Moving forward, the franchise will be in need of Jalen Hurts. However, for him to deliver in such a crucial stage, he needs to be healthy. And so Nick emphasized that it was a collaborative effort between the doctors, trainers, and players, to make Jalen available as soon as possible.

Sirianni also talked about Hurts and how he dealt with the news that he wouldn’t be playing – he was obviously unhappy because he’s a competitor, but he was terrific on the bench and was enthusiastic for his teammates. On Sunday, the head coach stated he admired Hurts’ work ethic and that he would be rooting for his squad.
