The first ever straight, cisgender male queen to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Maddy Morphosis, has responded to a backlash over her casting.

Maddy is set to star in the upcoming season of Drag Race and sashay into the 14th run of the hit show.

While male queens with female partners have competed in the show before, like Drag Race UK series one star Scaredy Kat, they have not outwardly identified as straight.

The drag artist from Arkansas, who uses she/her pronouns in drag, is making herstory in the competition. However, the news has sparked some negative comments online.

Taking to Instagram, Maddy said: ‘I’m just a drag queen who happens to be straight.’

She added: ‘I’m not here to show the world that “straight guys can do drag.” For anyone saying that I’m representing an underrepresented group, I appreciate you, but straight men are not a persecuted and excluded group within the drag community.’

Maddy’s appearance is the latest first for the show after Victoria Scone became the first cisgender woman to appear on the show after taking part in Drag Race UK series three.

It comes after the cast for the upcoming season of the American version of the show was announced, boasting a brand new talented line-up of queens.
