Ariana Grande fans have jumped to her defence after she was accused of Asian-fishing in a recent photoshoot.
The Positions singer is reported to have posted a set of images taken by LA-based photographer Katia Temkin, in which she’s seen wearing an oversized blazer and chunky platform heels with white bows in her hair.
However, the post was allegedly removed from Ariana’s page as some accused her of Asian-fishing.
The term is similar to Blackfishing, where one changes their appearance to look racially ambiguous or to appropriate another race.
In regards to Ariana’s photos, some suggested the singer’s eye shape had changed to ‘look more Asian’.
TikToker Victoria Alexander went viral after sharing a video about the photoshoot, in which she said: ‘I’m not saying that Ariana Grande has moved on from Blackfishing to Asianfishing but I am saying it took me longer than expected to realise that this is her.’
She continued: ‘I understand that celebrities will change up their look from time to time. But this is giving change up of phenotype [a racial chameleon].’
One of Victoria’s followers commented: ‘As a long time fan, this was disappointing to realise. There’s no denying it.’
Another said: ‘Love her but can’t defend her.’
One other commented on Twitter: ‘It’s a combination of the innocent posing, the little bows and s*t*. Even the colour of her lipstick.’
However, many others stepped in to defend Ariana, with one supporter tweeting: ‘I’m Asian and I can point out Asian fishing when I see one, Ariana isn’t Asian fishing, cause clearly y’all never heard of the flash from the camera and that skin can go pale in the winter.’
‘Those weirdos saying ariana looks asian now u know damn well she doesn’t,’ another said.

Ariana also received support from Oli London, a white British influencer who identifies as a transracial Korean. They have had ‘racial transition surgery’ to look like a member of K-pop group BTS.
‘No one should judge her, or use their White Privilege against her. She looks amazing. Proud of you Ari,’ he tweeted.
