Danny DeVito’s father ‘kept a box of watches and teeth’ as It’s Always Sunny cast recall bizarre first meeting

Danny DeVito’s father apparently had an interesting hobby where he collected watches and teeth and kept them in a box, which he would take out and show off on occasion.

The Hollywood legend, who has appeared in numerous productions from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest to Matilda, has spent the last 15 years starring in the brilliant sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Arriving in the second series in 2006, Danny saved the show from being axed as the bosses at FX decided Always Sunny needed a big name to get more viewers.

(Spoiler alert, it worked – the cult favourite has now become the longest-running live-action comedy in the world.)

The writers and stars of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia recalled their first meeting with Danny when he was considering joining the show, and it sounds as bizarre as any episode of the dark comedy.

Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, speaking on The Always Sunny Podcast, admitted that they were unsure at the meeting whether the Hollywood icon was in character as the deplorable Frank Reynolds or whether he was simply a bit of a weirdo.

Charlie, doing an impression of Danny, said: ‘He was having these conversations like, “My Dad used to keep a box of like, watches and teeth, and it could be like that.”‘

He was interrupted by Glenn, aka Dennis Reynolds, who said: ‘Hold on a second, I just want to clarify.

‘You’re not making something up right now, that was the conversation,’ with Charlie agreeing: ‘It’s word for word.’

Glenn continued: ‘He was saying that his grandfather – or his father – kept a box of watches and teeth, and was telling us some sort of a story, and we were like: “Is he telling us a story as himself or is he being Frank right now?”‘

The gang found it hard to tell if he was in character ‘for the entire’ meeting, and Charlie went on to say that the show ‘became about a f***ing lunatic who would definitely keep a box of watches and teeth, so he was spot on’.

Once they had secured the massive Hollywood name, who would become many fans’ favourite character in the show, the show went from strength to strength.

Danny threw himself into the character completely, and has since fallen out of a window, hit Charlie with his car, emerged naked from a couch and covered himself head-to-toe in hand sanitiser for the series.

Whether he was being Frank Reynolds for the duration of the Beverly Hills lunch meeting is still unclear to the cast, but regardless of his plan, it absolutely worked.
