A teaser for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the new chapter in the world of Harry Potter, has given us a first glimpse of Mads Mikkelsen, who has replaced Johnny Depp as dark wizard Gellert Grindlewald.

Mads is a natural choice for the role, given that he has played some of the most prolific on-screen villains in recent years, such as Hannibal and Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.

Ahead of the release of a full trailer on Monday, fans were given their first look at him in the role.

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss him moment, the 56-year-old can be seen surrounded by a crowd, his character undoubtedly ready to cause fresh mayhem.

In November last year, Johnny shared a statement on Instagram in which he said that Warner Bros had asked him to step down from playing Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts film, following public court proceedings with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

‘I have respected and agreed to that request,’ the actor wrote. Warner Bros confirmed Depp’s departure, thanking Depp for his work on the films and confirming that the role would be recast.

In August this year, he opened up about being ‘boycotted’ by Hollywood in a new interview, amid his split from ex-wife Amber Heard

He told the Sunday Times: ‘Some films touch people.. And for anything … For Hollywood’s boycott of, erm, me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?’

‘But, you know, I’m moving towards where I need to go to make all that … To bring things to light.’

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 58, was accused of domestic abuse by the Aquaman actress, 35, during their marriage, which he has firmly denied.

His rare interview came after he lost his bid to overturn a High Court ruling, following a landmark libel case which concluded he assaulted his former partner during their relationship.

The pair tied the knot in 2015 after meeting on the set of the Rum Diary, but announced their split the following year.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore is set for release in April 2022.
