Usyk Says He’ll Fight Canelo Alvarez on One Condition

It was hard to get eyes off Vasyl Lomachenko’s in-ring masterpiece against Richard Commey at Madison Square Garden in NYC this past weekend; however, there were also two big men in the building that caught everyone’s attention.

Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was in attendance and was sitting ringside to support his Ukrainian teammate, Vasyl Lomachenko. Whether he expected it or not, Tyson Fury also showed up and both champions even had a friendly exchange in their first informal meeting.

After the event, Usyk answered a lot of questions about fighting Tyson Fury. But, one reporter asked him a much bigger and a fan-favorite question; he first asked him about his thoughts on boxing’s p4p king, Canelo Alvarez, moving up to cruiserweight next. The reporter then put him on the spot by asking if he would ever consider fighting him.

“Yeah I can do it, I can fight him at cruiserweight but the only thing is that I keep my belts at heavyweight. Then I go back to cruiserweight, fight him, and then come back to heavyweight,” replied Oleksandr Usyk.

Oleksandr Usyk wants to skip the Anthony Joshua rematch and fight Tyson Fury right away

With both heavyweight champions under one roof at the same time, Tyson Fury and Usyk were bound to cross paths at one point. And, that is exactly what happened. Both champions faced off ringside and shared a friendly exchange as well.

After the first face-off between the two and after the Loma-Commey clash, Oleksandr Usyk was asked if he would be open to fighting ‘The Gypsy King’ right away. He suggested that a clash with Fury would be ideal; skipping out on the Anthony Joshua rematch would be a step less for him to become the undisputed champion at heavyweight.

“Yes, of course, it’s one step less. I could fight for the undisputed heavyweight title,” said Usyk.

However, Tyson Fury’s co-promoter wants Fury to stick to his fight with Dillian Whyte; he also wants Usyk to honor his rematch with Anthony Joshua.

“Forget these step asides. Let Joshua fight Usyk again. He has a contract to do that and let Dillian Whyte fight Tyson Fury. Whoever wins those two fights then fights for all the belts. I mean, it’s just a few months until it’s sorted out,” said Bob Arum.
