‘Phil Just Blew Me Off’: Jordan Spieth Once Experienced Every Fanboy’s Worst Nightmare

Jordan Spieth is arguably one of the best golfers in the sport. He is a three-time major championship winner who won the FedEx cup in 2015.

Notably, before turning into a modern-day great, young Phil was a fan himself. Back in 2018, he revealed the infamous story behind him wanting an autograph of American sensation, Phil Mickelson.

In the press conference, Jordan said, “There was a time that I was out at the Byron Nelson with my dad, and Phil Mickelson and Davis Love were on the putting green, and I was yelling at them.” He went to Phil Mickelson for getting his autograph, but Phil blew him off.

He added, “When they finished Phil was pulled off in a different direction and Davis came and signed for me. And I thought for the longest time that Phil just blew me off and that Davis was the nicest guy, And Phil I didn’t care for as much for a while because of that.”

Phil’s Reaction

Jordan Spieth also revealed that when he narrated this to Phil, he had a rather hilarious response. He said, “I think I’ve told him this story since then, and of course, he probably responded with a Phil-like ‘Yeah, I knew who you were I didn’t want to go over there and sign, something like that.”

Tour pros blowing off fans

Golf fans travel miles just to see their favorite golfers play. Undoubtedly, they are an important part of the game, who help in keeping the game alive. However, as Tour pros often maintain full concentration while playing, they tend to not pay attention to fans on the sidelines.

This doesn’t always sit well with golf fans. Tour pros are in a hurry and accidentally blow the fans off and forget to sign their autographs.

One such incident took place at the 2014 Open championship when Rory McIlroy ignored a fan who was asking for his autograph. Later Ian Poulter clarified the same, saying, “just to clear up the signature thing. We are asked not to sign autographs until we have officially handed in our scorecards. #RulesAreRules.”
