ATP Cup 2022 Prize Money Breakdown: How Much Will The Champions Earn?

The ATP Cup is an international tournament that precedes the Australian Open. In fact, the 2022 edition of the tournament will be its third edition. This competition serves to kickstart the men’s tennis season at the beginning of the year.

Thus, it will begin on the 1st of January 2022, and run through till the 9th. Competing nations go against each other with their players to win the ultimate glory at the end of the year.

The current defending champions of the ATP Cup are Team Russia, who defeated Italy to win the cup in February 2021.

The 2022 ATP Cup has changed its format this year. The original format saw 24 teams play against each other through three different cities- Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.

However, owing to the travel restrictions this year due to the pandemic, the tournament will only be played in Sydney. Thus, only 16 teams will be participating this year.

Nevertheless, things look bright for the subsequent 2023 Cup. “We plan to bring back the original 24-team ATP Cup format across three Australian cities for 2023,” Tom Larner, the tournament director stated.

Many teams would see some diminished star power. For example, both team Serbia and Spain will be missing star players Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, respectively. In fact, Novak Djokovic confirmed his withdrawal from the 2022 ATP Cup a few days ahead of the tournament.

Total prize money involved

In 2023, there will be an increase in the prize pool of the Cup. Previously, the tournament had a $7,500,000 prize pool. On the other hand, the next Cup in 2022 is set to have almost double the amount, at $14,000,000.

The tournament is a team-based championship. Thus, the prize money’s allocation is different, compared to a regular singles tournament. Players and teams gain the money from the total pool for participation as well as match victories. Most of it depends on their performance in matches played.

Every team playing in the ATP Cup has a Number 1 player. This player is the highest-ranked player from that country, as per the ATP standings. Thus, being the highest-ranked player, he would receive $220,000 for his participation.

The second highest-ranked player from that nation would receive $190,000 for turning up. Subsequently, the other two players for the team, in order of ranking, would get $160,000 and $135,000 respectively.

Players can earn even more prize money by winning their matches. When a number 1 player defeats another nation’s number 1 player, the stage of the tournament decides the prize money. In the group stage, the prize for such a win would be $44,500.

On the other hand, the same victory (between two highest-ranked players) would net a $150,000 prize if it’s the semi-final. For a final matchup, the individual prize money would increase exponentially to @250,000.

When any player from a team wins, the team is rewarded its prize money equally. Thus, winning a match in the group stage would net a team $10,000 per player in prize money. Similarly, the rewards increase for the final two matches. A semi-final win brings in $30,000 per player, and a final win would ensure that each member gets $50,000.
