Let Bygones Be Bygones: Red Bull F1 Boss Christian Horner on Mercedes Rivalry

Mercedes and Red Bull had an intense 2021 season. Both were pushing themselves to the limit, trying to have the edge over the other. However, the turning point in their rivalry was at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The controversial race at the Yas Marina saw the Silver Arrows file for protest and tried to overturn the outcome of the race. But, Team Principal, Christian Horner has stated they have forgotten all that has happened in the past.

The Brackley-based outfit and the Milton-Keynes-based outfit had fierce battles throughout the course of the 2021 campaign. However, the outcome of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix urged Mercedes to protest as they felt, the result was unfair to them. However, the Raging Bulls have no bad blood with the Silver Arrows and have stated they have moved on from the incident.

Speaking to GPFans, “People in this business have such very short memories. We’ve even forgotten what happened [earlier in the year]. It’s been such a long racing season.

“Max is absolutely a deserving world champion. When you look at the championship as a whole, of course, the events in Abu Dhabi drew an awful lot of comment but that happens in sport. We’ve had a lot of bad luck this year, we got fortunate with a safety car, we made the right strategic calls, great strategy, great teamwork and great execution by Max, and we won the race. Time will move on. Max is a very deserving world champion, we’re incredibly proud of that, and the history books will always show he is the 2021 world champion.”

The dramatic ending to the final race of the 2021 season

Sunday’s race saw the Dutch driver start from pole position, but his arch-rival, Lewis Hamilton claimed the lead as soon as the lights went out. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, on the other hand, refused to allow the Mercedes driver past him so Verstappen could catch up.

After passing Perez, it felt like it was just a matter of time before Hamilton seized the win. Max’s title hopes were fading with only a few laps to go until Nicholas Latifi crashed, bringing out the safety car. Later, the FIA made a contentious decision that pitted both title candidates against each other for the final laps of the race.

Lewis did his best to keep Verstappen in his rearview mirrors, but failed; resulting in Max taking the lead of the race to the chequered flag.
