A brand new crime drama has arrived on Channel 4 for viewers to sink their teeth into, as audiences are transported to the C-wing of a men’s prison in Screw.
Inspired by creator Rob Williams’ experiences working in a prison, the series stars Teachers actor Nina Sosanya as Leigh, the prison officer in charge of the team at Long Marsh Prison, with Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell entering the ranks as 21-year-old trainee Rose.
Other officers in the prison include the optimist Ali (Line of Duty star Faraz Ayub), the obnoxious Gary (I May Destroy You star Stephen Wight), the straight-talking Jackie (King Gary’s Laura Checkley) and the indolent Don (Game of Thrones actor Ron Donachie).
The programme veers from darkly dramatic moments to comedic twists, shining a light on the multifaceted lives officers and prisoners lead behind the cell walls.
Here’s all you need to know.
What time does Screw start?
Screw is due to start on Thursday January 6 at 9pm on Channel 4.

After the premiere, the rest of the series will air at the same time on Thursdays, with six episodes in total.
While viewers can watch the drama on a weekly basis, if they’d rather watch it in one go, they can, as the entire series will be released on streaming platform All 4.
What is Screw about?
Screw is created by Rob Williams, who has previous experience working in prisons.
Taking inspiration from moments that he witnessed and people that he met behind bars – including a formidable ‘sparrow of a girl’ prison officer who looked like Amy Winehouse – the show is set in an all-male prison, run by a team of officers, otherwise known as ‘screws’.

While the series is a drama, it is also darkly funny, featuring plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes.
Leigh is an extremely committed officer, having spent the majority of her adult life dedicated to her work in the prison.
However, Long Marsh is a high-pressure environment, which can take its toll on both the inmates and those in charge.
Is there a trailer for Screw?
In the trailer for Screw, Leigh gives Rose the lay of the land when she starts her new job.
The boss seems to express doubts in the ingénue’s capabilities, while Rose is determined to prove to everyone that she’s got what it takes.
Various dangers present themselves, as the team have to do their best to quell any violence that might break out in the wing.
