He first slammed home a spectacular bicycle kick – only to be flagged offside from Junior Hoilett’s cross.

Moments later he once again had the ball flying into the back of the net as he controlled a flighted pass with his chest before rifling home with his left foot.

But the 33-year-old was flagged offside for a second time as Reading struggled for a breakthrough.

Harry Wilson had already opened the scoring for Fulham at the Madejski.

And Aleksandar Mitrovic made it 2-0 to the visitors going into half-time after Carroll’s pair of disallowed efforts.

Wilson added another after the break before Kenny Tete made it 4-0 to put the game to bed.

Fulham are in second in the Championship – a point behind leaders Bournemouth.

The Cottagers have a game in hand as they bid for promotion back to the Premier League.

Reading are struggling down in 21st – one spot above the relegation zone.
