Sony Open at Hawaii Course Preview: All You Need to Know About the Waialae Country Club

As the PGA tour embarked on its new year tour, it is enjoying a relaxed beginning with a two-week swing on the picturesque island of Hawaii. After a riveting and historic weekend came to an end with the Sentry Tournament of Champions last week, its shifting base to the capital city of Honolulu, for the first full-field event of the season, the 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Beginning tomorrow, the Waialae Country Club will host the second event of the year, with a purse of $7,500,000. Some of the top professional golfers will be teeing it up, including defending champion Kevin Na, Kim Furyk, Abraham Ancer, Sungjae Im, and Hideki Matsuyama. A fun-filled week can be expected ahead, with hopefully a lot of history.

Everything about the Sony Open venue

The Waialae Country Club is a par 70, 7044 yard Seth Raynor designed old course in Honolulu. It has been host to PGA Tour’s Sony Open since 1965. In 2017, Tim Doak restored the course that is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Koolau mountain range. The scenic beauty boasts of tailored and trimmed grass with majestic mountains and calm sea waters as the backdrop.

Wind poses the most challenges on the flat coastal course, providing one of the only, yet most difficult, natural obstacles. Moreover, 19-under is the average winning score across the previous ten editions of the event. Additionally, Justin Thomas holds both the records– the 18-hole and the 72-hole- with a score of 59 and 253, created in 2017.
Thankfully, the weather is supposed to be mostly sunny throughout the week, with an exception of some clouds predicted on Friday. In addition, Thursday to Sunday expects a wind speed of between 6 mph to 10 mph. So hopefully, it will prove to be a challenging week for the players!
