*The following article contains spoilers for episode three of Bloodlands*

One of the most riveting shows of the year so far continued on Sunday, with the third episode of Bloodlands arriving on our screens.

The BBC One drama followed James Nesbitt’s DCI Tom Brannick in the aftermath of last week’s shocking episode. which saw him kill Ian McElhinney’s Adam Corry in cold blood.

Viewers were left reeling, with many believing that Tom could be the serial killer Goliath.

Episode three saw a missing persons investigation begin following Adam’s disappearance, with all manner of revelations playing out along the way.

Here are five questions we have ahead of next week’s finale.

Will the truth be revealed about Tom’s murder of Adam Corry?

Adam’s body was found by police early on in the episode, having drifted to shore after being dumped by Tom following the events of episode two.

While DCS Jackie Twomey (Lorcan Cranitch) reprimanded Tom and DS Niamh McGovern (Charlene McKenna) for involving Adam in their investigations, Tom managed to avoid raising suspicions.

It was revealed that only three officers from the precinct had worked there since the original case in 1998. However, Tom’s secret remains hidden for now, with Jackie becoming the chief suspect following the discovery of evidence planted by Tom and Tori Matthews.

Will Tom get away with murder? We’ll find out next week.

Did the notebooks contain information that could reveal Goliath’s killer?

The investigating officers found missing pages had been torn from the notebooks in Adam Corry’s house – the same notebook handled by Tom in episode two.

Adam kept detailed notes about his investigations in the books, and key information regarding the identity of Goliath. If those pages are found, could there be huge developments in the case on the way?

What do the references to the yellow cranes actually mean?

Will the relevance of the cranes be revealed? (Picture: BBC)

One of the abiding images from the series has been the distinctive yellow Samson and Goliath twin shipbuilding gantry cranes found in Queen’s Island, Belfast.

A postcard featuring them was found inside the car dumped in the Strangford Lough, and one was left next to Pat Keenan, who was found cuffed to a radiator in a hotel room back in episode one.

There were more ominous shots of the cranes in episode three, as well as a postcard planted in DCS Jackie Twomey’s caravan. Is the relevance merely that the cranes share the name of the killer, or has their true significance of the cranes yet to be revealed?

What really happened to Tom’s wife?

Could Emma still be alive? (Picture: BBC)

It’s one major element of the mystery that still needs solving – what happened to Tom’s wife Emma? In one scene from episode two between Naimh and Michael Smiley’s Dinger, we learned that Emma ‘wasn’t just Tom’s wife’, but had connections in the intelligence services and could have been able to ‘manipulate her own disappearance’.

Adam revealed his brother – one of the victims found on the island – had been having an affair with Tom’s wife. But could she still be alive? While episode three offered us little in the way of new information, it’s one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle that could be answered next week.

Why were DCS Jackie Twomey records redacted?

While Tom continues to frame Jackie for the murder of Adam Corry, he still has some explaining to do about events in the 90s surroundin the Goliath killings.

Adam was convinced Jackie was covering up the case before his death, and files obtained in the new episode show that his records had been suspiciously redacted.

The team’s investigations lead them to an old postbox Jackie used in the 90s which cast further suspicion, before planted evidence placed found in his caravan lead to his arrest.

While he is innocent in Adam’s murder, could Jackie have played a part in the earlier killings? Will he walk free in next week’s finale, or be found guilty?

Bloodlands continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
