BBC Radio 1’s Adele Roberts admits ‘I didn’t think I could get cancer’ in first interview since bowel cancer surgery

Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts urged people to ‘get checked’ during her first TV appearance since undergoing surgery last October, following a ‘shock’ bowel cancer diagnosis.
The TV and radio star announced in October that she had been diagnosed with bowel cancer before having the operation, revealing it had ‘all happened so quickly’.
She returned to work at the BBC just a month later, after successful surgery and chatted about her illness – and continued recovery – on Friday morning.
Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway welcomed her onto Good Morning Britain, where she shared her initial reluctance to call her GP during the Covid pandemic.
Kate, who appeared on I’m A Celebrity’s 2019 series alongside Adele, introduced her ‘lovely friend’ as she sat down next to her partner of 17 years, Kate Holderness.
‘Do I look alright Kate?’ Adele asked her pal, with Kate reassuring her: ‘You look amazing. Was that one of the things that surprised you? You’ve always been keen on your fitness.’

‘Yeah it was a shock, I didn’t realise I could get cancer, I know that sounds silly. I know now it can happen to anyone at any age,’ she replied.
The DJ ‘ran all the time’ and was ‘pretty much vegetarian’ before noticing her digestion started to go ‘a bit funny.’
‘After all the stuff we ate in the jungle I wasn’t surprised,’ she teased.

On what prompted her to get checked out, Adele said: ‘I just noticed I was going to the toilet things were starting to change, I noticed mucus at first
‘Then I started to notice a bit of blood and it started to get a bit more regular, I thought should I ring the doctors or should I not because of Covid was happening, I didn’t want to bother the GP.
‘In the end it got so consistent, I thought I should just in case.’
Ben probed her on how she felt to get her diagnosis, admitting she was ‘absolute shock’ upon receiving the news:
‘I feel like I’ve still not taken it on board, I feel like I’m still trying to get through it each day,’ she added.
The star was told she had bowel cancer on October 1 last year, with her operation taking place just over three weeks later, on October, 25.
She was also fitted with a stoma – who she named Audrey – which she previously credited with ‘helping save my life.’
‘I was able to get into a good routine, get back in Radio 1, I see chemo as my little snipers, getting rid of anything the might be left.

‘Hopefully by the middle of this year ill be back to my normal self,’ Adele beamed.
Her partner Kate shared some gorgeous words, commenting: ‘She’s been amazing, it’s been 16 weeks since her first diagnosis, surgery a stoma, chemo, she’s just faced it with positivity like she does everything else!’
