Andy Murray Lets Go of His Coach After Disappointing Australian Open 2022 Run
Andy Murray had a short stint at the recently concluded Australian Open. After an impressive first-round victory against Nikoloz Basilashvili, Murray was defeated by Japanese youngster Taro Daniel in straight sets. Murray, who announced split with long-time coach Jamie Delgado last December, was on trial period with Jan de Witt for the Australian Summer.

However, the Brit ended his partnership with Witt after the loss in Australia. During Murray’s Abu Dhabi exhibition event, Jan de Witt contracted COVID and couldn’t be in the support box. But, he was present during the Brit’s run in Sydney, where he reached the final and lost to Aslan Karatsev.
Talking about his run in Australia, Murray was disappointed with his performance and said, “Making the second round of slams is not something I find extremely motivating.”

After the split with coach Jamie Delgado, Murray detailed what he will be looking for in his next coach as he will be joining at a different juncture in Murray’s playing career.
“The decision is an important one for me,” Murray explained, “because obviously I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing so I want to make sure that the person that’s with me for the last period of my career is the right one.”

Unfortunately, Jan de Witt didn’t appear to be the right person for Andy after what happened at the Australian Open. Witt previously coached the likes of Giles Simon and Gael Monfils. As this trial run didn’t convert into a permanent fixture, Murray’s search for a coach continues.

The former world no.1 plans to play as many tournaments as possible this year. His intention is to make the most out of the last phase of his career and for that, Andy Murray needs a strong and experienced mind to guide him through on-court adversities. Ever since the split with Delgado, Jan de Witt was Murray’s second choice.
Before Witt, Andy had another trial run with noted Spanish coach Esteban Carril. They briefly worked together at the ATP Stockholm Open and ended their partnership as Esteban wasn’t willing to travel throughout the season.
For the last phase of his career, Andy Murray’s search for a coach continues as he plans to play tournaments in Qatar(ATP 250) and Dubai(ATP 500) in the coming few months.
