Olly Murs often thinks about ‘what he could have done’ to prevent Caroline Flack’s death

Olly Murs has revealed he often wonders if he could have done anything to prevent Caroline Flack’s death.

The singer, 37, who was a close friend of Flack’s, was devastated by her death and says he still thinks about her every day.

Flack died by suicide in February 2020 at the age of 40; she and Murs had co-hosted both The X Factor and The Xtra Factor together and had developed a close bond.

Now, in an interview with The Daily Star, Murs has admitted he still struggles to come to terms with her loss and often wonders if there was anything he ‘could have done’ to stop her from taking her own life.

‘I miss her every day and I think about her every day,’ he told the outlet. ‘I think about what I could have done to change things, what I could have said.

‘There are all sorts of questions I ask myself every day. It’s always difficult.’

Reflecting on Flack’s tragic death, he admitted he had ‘never experienced… that level of grief’ before.

Murs said he was ‘lucky’ to have the support of his friends and family, and finds ‘a lot of comfort’ in speaking to Flack’s mother and her own friends.

The presenter and musician is set to take on his first Saturday night TV presenting role since Flack’s death with new show Starstruck, and admits it was ‘strange’ being without her when they filmed the pilot.

However he felt that ‘Caroline was definitely with me’, and spent time imagining what they would be doing if she was hosting the show with him: ‘having a joke or a dance’.

‘I’ll never forget her,’ he said.

‘She is always there in my memories and thoughts. I’ll always try to do my best for her.’

The pair first met when they were chosen to present The Xtra Factor in 2011, and Murs has previously spoken out about the ‘awful’ level of abuse thrown at her when they moved on to host The X Factor.

In the documentary Caroline Flack: Her Life and Death, Murs outlined the abuse Caroline encountered online, with the media and people on social media ‘constantly’ barraging them with hurtful comments.

February 15 will mark the second anniversary of Flack’s death, with an inquest in 2021 ruling it a suicide.
