Britney Spears’ dad’s lawyer has claimed the singer is free to file a motion to terminate her conservatorship at ‘any time’, but says she hasn’t yet done so.

Vivian L. Thoreen, from Holland & Knight LLP, who represents Britney’s father Jamie Spears, says the singer is always able to file to have the conservatorship she has been under for the past 13 years removed.

She told People: ‘[Jamie has] diligently and professionally carried out his duties as one of Britney’s conservators, and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court.

‘Any time Britney wants to end her conservatorship, she can ask her lawyer to file a petition to terminate it; she has always had this right but in 13 years has never exercised it.

‘Britney knows that her Daddy loves her, and that he will be there for her whenever and if she needs him, just as he always has been — conservatorship or not.’

Britney has been under her conservatorship since 2008, with the court originally naming her father as the permanent conservator of her person and attorney Andrew Wallet the permanent co-conservator of her estate, a role from which he retired in  June 2019.

Britney filed court documents last summer stating that she is ‘strongly opposed’ to having her father return as sole conservator, adding that she ‘strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve in this role.’

Following the recent Framing Britney Spears documentary, renewed attention has been placed on whether the conservatorship should now be removed to give the Toxic star control over her finances.

Britney had suggested the Bessemer Trust Company take over as conservator of her estate, a suggestion which was backed by her mother, Lynne Spears.

Further hearings have been scheduled for March 17, and April 27.
