Roman Kemp contemplated suicide after 13 year battle with depression – but was saved by his mum
Roman Kemp opens up about his battle with depression and admits in his new documentary that he previously contemplated suicide.
The 28-year-old radio DJ opens up about his own mental health in BBC Three film Our Silent Emergency, including being on anti-depressants since the age of 15.
In one particularly difficult moment, Roman tells his mum Shirlie that she once saved him.
In the emotional chat, he says: ‘It’s really hard and it’s hard for me to tell you this.
‘That day I thought about going to the train station and jumping in front of a train. I’m sorry I never told you that.’
He adds that he struggled with life in the spotlight and believed he was only famous because of his dad, EastEnders and Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp.
‘I remember saying to myself, “What’s the point? Why am I carrying on?”’ he tells the camera.
The new BBC documentary, which airs next Tuesday, also sees him reflect on his friendship with producer Joe Lyons, who died last year.
Calling him ‘like a brother’, Roman said he had no idea that his friend was struggling until it was too late.
Joe’s memory has since lived on thanks to his friends, with Sonny Jay, who is currently taking part in Dancing On Ice, also creating a personal routine as tribute to his friend.
‘Get on the phone, speak to your friends, see if they’re all right,’ Roman encourages viewers. ‘And ask if they’re OK twice.’
