Gogglebox will review Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive Oprah interview and Piers Morgan’s on-air clash
Gogglebox never shies away from getting its stars to review the most controversial scenes to air on our TV screens and this week’s episode will be no different, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview on the bill.
On Monday, UK viewers finally got to watch as Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a no-holds-barred, two-hour long chat.
They discussed the pressures they faced as working members of the Royal family, along with their reasons for wanting to leave and move to the US, with Harry discussing the breakdown of his relationship with dad Prince Charles and Meghan revealing her mental health struggles.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also claimed to experience racism within the Palace, with Piers Morgan later hitting out at the couple, stating he ‘doesn’t believe’ Meghan’s claims and was ‘sickened’ by what he had watched.
Both Harry and Meghan’s tell-all chat and Piers’ explosive reaction – that later led to him quitting Good Morning Britain -will be reviewed by our Gogglebox favourites on Friday’s episode, with the show’s starts getting their teeth stuck into all the drama and the fallout that followed.
TV critic Scott Bryan confirmed exactly what will feature on Gogglebox on Twitter and posted: ‘FYI: Gogglebox *will* be reviewing the Harry and Meghan Oprah interview, as well as what happened with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain. This Friday night at 9pm.’
Harry and Meghan’s interview has been hot topic of conversation all week, with the revelations made dividing viewers.
BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty was seen throwing her support behind the couple as she praised Harry and Meghan, who is pregnant with the pair’s second child, for speaking out and refusing to stay silent.
Piers, who has been a staunch critic of Harry and Meghan, faced backlash as he seemed to questioned Meghan’s claims about her mental health live on Good Morning Britain.
‘Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me weather report. The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our Royal family I think is contemptible,’ Piers said.
ITV, who run a nationwide mental wellness campaign called Get Britain Talking, faced criticism from viewers and later issued a statement standing by Meghan, as Piers clarified his comments regarding mental health.
‘I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what she said. But let me just state for the record my position on mental illness and on suicide,’ he said.
‘Mental illness and suicide, these are clearly very serious things and should be taken extremely seriously and if somebody is feeling that way they should get the treatment and help that they need every time and if they belong to an institution like the Royal family and they go and seek that help, they should absolutely be given it.
‘It’s not for me to question whether she felt suicidal, I wasn’t in her mind and that’s for her to say.’
He was then seen, however, clashing with his GMB co-star Alex Beresford live on air as Alex called him out for continuously ‘trashing’ Meghan and Piers stormed off set.
Alex has since reacted to Piers’ shock exit from the breakfast show and insists he wishes his former colleague well.
The weather presenter said: ‘There is so much that could be said. Piers’ departure sincerely wasn’t the conclusion I was hoping for. Over the last few years, Piers and I have had a lively, cheek on-air relationship.
‘We both wanted to be on the show Tuesday morning, and from our very public conversations on Twitter, we both knew how strongly our opinions differed on the treatment of Harry and Meghan pre and post the interview that has split the world.
‘I hoped we could reach a place of understanding. It’s sad that we weren’t able to get there, but challenging his opinion was not an outrage. On this occasion, we have to agree to disagree. I didn’t want him to quit, but I did want him to listen.’
Alex added: ‘Personally, Piers has always supported my growth. He’s given me advice on several occasions and for that I am grateful. I wish him well!’
