Peaky Blinders season 6 release date: When is the BBC series back on?

Fans of Peaky Blinders have been very patient, but now the wait for the sixth and final season of the hit BBC show is nearly over.

It’s been more than two years since season five of the gang-inspired drama aired its latest episode, which left viewers on a dramatic cliff-hanger.

Leader of the Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), was seen pointing a gun at his head after having visions of his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis), with it not known whether the trigger was pulled.

A trailer for season six was shared on New Year’s Day and, judging by the 90-second teaser, the series shows no signs of easing up as fans are shown a clip of Murphy’s Tommy Shelby opening fire with a machine gun in the middle of a field at dusk.

Previous trailers seemingly confirmed both the survival of Tommy and the return of Tom Hardy as Alfie Solomons.

But when will the series finally be back on our screens at last?

When will Peaky Blinders season 6 be released?

The sixth final season will begin on Sunday, February 27 – by order of the Peaky Blinders.

The news was revealed with the unveiling of a mural created by street artist Akse and played over the Old Crown in Digbeth, Birmingham – where the show is set.

Newcomer to the show Conrad Khan had teased to the Radio Times earlier in the year that viewers can look forward to the new episodes next month. 

He said the drama ‘comes out, from what I last heard – I mean, these things change so quickly – I think that will come out next February’ – a date which ahs now been confirmed.

The most recent glimpse of the upcoming season was released by the BBC on New Year’s Day, via the official Peaky Blinders social media accounts.

The teaser also showed the return of The Queen’s Gambit actress Anya Taylor Joy as Michael Gray’s scheming wife Gina, while also offering a glimpse at Stephen Graham’s mysterious new character, as well as teasing the impending threat of the rise of Nazism as the show moves closer to the start of the Second World War.

Lead star Cillian Murphy spoke recently with Rolling Stone about the final season, saying that: ‘I think it’s going to be very intense.

‘The word we keep using is “gothic”. Yeah, it’s going to be heavy!’ 

With the show having been off-screen for over two years now, fans are more than ready to be reacquainted with Tommy and his crew.

Where will Peaky Blinders season 6 be available?

Peaky Blinders will return to BBC iPlayer alongside airing on BBC One.

It’s likely the series will air weekly on the broadcaster, with six episodes expected as usual.

What else do we know about Peaky Blinders season 6?

Cillian Murphy, Sam Clafin, and Paul Anderson will return to their roles, with other regular cast members expected to be back once more.

However, some new faces will also be added to the Peaky Blinders Season 6 cast including Line of Duty’s Stephen Graham and 21-year-old Conrad.

Elsewhere, it’s not yet known how the drama will write out beloved star Helen McCrory who died after being ill with cancer earlier this year.

Speaking with Variety, Murphy has said that the final season will be a tribute to the late McCrory, who played his Aunt Polly on the series.

‘I think this is the culmination of the series that hopefully improves upon the last season and makes the most recent one the richest and deepest one that we possibly can, partially because of all of the pandemic s*** happening in the world and, of course, the really sad loss of [Helen] McCrory’ said the actor.

He has assured fans that ‘her presence and her character’s presence are very much still felt in the series, and it is very much part of Tommy’s journey in the season.’

He described her as a ‘phenomenal’ actress and her death as ‘an enormous loss to the whole acting community and not just for our show.’

‘My thoughts are always with Damian and her kids. I just hope that the show will live up to her memory and our memory of her.’

Peaky Blinders season 6 will begin on February 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
