Dizzee Rascal ‘pushed ex-fiancee to ground’ in ‘chaotic’ row, court told amid assault trial

A London court has heart chart-topping rapper Dizzee Rascal ‘pressed his forehead against’ his ex-fiancee and ‘pushed her to the ground’ during a ‘chaotic’ argument.

Dizzee – real name Dylan Mills – appeared in Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Friday as his assault trial began, as the grime artist denies assaulting Cassandra Jones at a residential property in Streatham on June 8 last year.

The 36-year-old was seen heading to court earlier today, in a suit and tie.

Prosecutor Helena Duong said the assault occurred in ‘the context of a domestic dispute’ about child contact.

The court heard Mills and Jones, who have two children and had been together nine years before splitting in February 2021, were arguing about their children when he dropped his daughter off at the property.

Duong said Mills, who is behind chart-topping singles Bonkers and Dance Wiv Me, had been ‘confrontational’ when he picked his daughter up earlier that day.

The prosecutor said later in the afternoon, Jones rang Mills when he was late dropping off their daughter and he began ‘swearing’ on the phone.

When he arrived at the property, the court was told Jones said he could not come in but he picked up his son at the entrance and ‘barged her out the way to make his way into the house with his son in his arms’.

Duong said he made his way into the kitchen where Jones’s mother, Dawn Kirk, was and he was ‘screaming and shouting’.

The prosecutor said Jones began to film Mills, adding: ‘The crown say it shows him raising his voice towards Kirk while he has his son under his arms.

‘The crown say he became very angry and started acting erratically, banging his head three times on the fridge with his son in his arms.’

Duong said she tried to call the police but he grabbed her phone, adding: ‘Ms Jones wanted to get her son off him.’

The prosecutor said Mills then ‘put his forehead against hers and pushed her around the room’ and Jones then screamed for him to ‘get off’ her.

It’s alleged there was then a ‘scuffle for the phone’ and Mills ‘pushed her to the ground and she landed on her elbows’.

Duong said: ‘The shouting was sufficiently loud to cause concern to the neighbour’ who came over to calm the situation down and found ‘Mr Mills getting to 100% anger’.

The prosecutor described the dispute as a ‘fairly chaotic scene of moving around the house’, while Jones told the court in tears that Mills grew ‘very angry’ and ‘was out of control’ during the incident, claiming he ‘nearly dropped’ their son.

Jones later said: ‘He put his forehead on my forehead and he pushed me around the room’ but added that it was not a ‘headbutt’.

She said he also ‘barged’ her and she ‘fell to the floor’, bruising and grazing her left arm, adding: ‘He was charging around, in and out of the house. He was out of control.’

On August 2, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed Mills had been charged, saying: ‘Dylan Mills, 36, of Sevenoaks, Kent, has been charged with assault after an incident at a residential address in Streatham on 8 June.

‘Officers attended and a woman reported minor injuries. She did not require hospital treatment.’

The rapper was released on conditional bail.

Mills was 18 when his debut, Boy in da Corner, was released in 2003, with the album going on to become one of the year’s most acclaimed albums and winning the Mercury Prize.

Since then, he has released a further six albums, including 2020’s E3 AF, and achieved three consecutive number ones with Dance Wiv Me with Calvin Harris, Bonkers with Armand Van Helden, and Holiday featuring Chrome.

Mills was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to music.
