Floyd Mayweather Details How He Was Manipulated by ‘Family Member’ Into Signing With Top Rank: ‘He Was Doing What Was Best for Him’

Floyd Mayweather earned the biggest paydays of his career after he started co-promoting his own events. Although he was already earning lucrative numbers under Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions, the boxer doubled up the digits or even tripled them with his constant surge as a free agent.

Mayweather made his professional debut in 1996 and retired in 2017, after over two decades of wholesome action. During this journey, he stayed with Top Rank Promotions from 1996 to 2006. Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather bagged his biggest fights after that. And if not for a family member, Mayweather may have never signed with Top Rank.

The undefeated boxer talked about how he signed a deal with Top Rank Promotions in an exclusive chat with SportsIcon and shocked several fans with his insights.

Floyd Mayweather said, “My family member just took me to a company, Top Rank, and said sign. And at that particular time, I was a young kid. I had to have good representation. You know, because I didn’t know no better. So if I knew, what I know now, would I have signed with Top Rank? I would have a lawyer to look over my paperwork at that particular time.”

‘TBE’ didn’t specify who the family member was. However, he threw an honest opinion and accused the person of making some money out of his talent and contractual bindings. Well, Mayweather became the richest boxer of all time with his smart moves in the later years of his career. He generated two of the biggest fights of all-time against Manny Pacquiao in 2015 and Conor McGregor in 2017 to rake up his net worth to new heights.

Floyd Mayweather now understands the business to the core

While Mayweather claims he understood very little about the business back then, the tables have changed now. Despite retiring in 2017, he is still making money from the sport, which is more than what many of the active fighters make. Mayweather reportedly earned somewhere between $50-$100 million from his exhibition scrap against Logan Paul in 2021.

He is now eyeing a fight against YouTuber Money Kicks, which shall bring him another hefty payday. That said, Mayweather has also become a promoter and is actively generating prizefighters from the modern era, in which Gervonta Davis has already become his star prodigy. So, it’s safe to believe that Mayweather mastered both sides of boxing- from inside and outside the ring.
