Spencer Matthews to visit spot where late brother died descending Mount Everest aged 22 for new documentary

Spencer Matthews is said to be in the early stages of producing a documentary about his brother’s final moments before he died trekking down from the summit of Mount Everest.

Michael Matthews, who was an experienced mountaineer, died aged 22 in 1999 on a mission that earned him the title of the youngest Brit to ever conquer Everest.

He was the 162nd person to die on the mountain and his body was never recovered

Made In Chelsea star Spencer reportedly has the support of both his parents, his brother James and his wife Pippa Middleton, to develop the ‘hugely emotional project’, which is believed to have attracted interest from Disney Plus.

‘Though the Matthews family were never able to recover Michael’s body, there is a guide who believes they know his final resting place,’ an insider said.

‘It is a hugely emotional project and will be a very upsetting journey for many reasons, but Spencer is hugely passionate about embarking on it if he can make it work.’

The insider added to The Sun: ‘For years the family has raised funds in Michael’s name and for Spencer if they can get the project off the ground, it is going to be for his family and Michael.’

Before death, stock market trader Michael had climbed some of the world’s most challenging mountains, including Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Opening up about the loss of his brother, Spencer penned in his 2013 autobiography: ‘His loss was devastating for the family and over time this became worse because the circumstances surrounding Michael’s death have never been fully explained.

‘James took the news badly. With just a year and a half between them, he and Mike were the closest of friends. The loss was heartbreaking for James.’
