Luckily, a mum-of-two has found the perfect recipe that will guarantee your favourite tops and dresses won’t fade as quick – and the secret ingredient is already sitting in your kitchen cupboard.

Carolina McCauley is a busy mum-of-two whose savvy tidying hacks have made her a favourite amongst fellow cleaning fanatics on social media.

And now she has surprised her fans with a genius washing trick for bright coloured clothes.

Just like you would with dark jeans and t-shirts, the first thing to do is turning your clothes inside out – this will also prevent damage to the outside of your garments, such as residue from the washing powder.

When ready to start the washing machine – always wash similar colours together, Carolina said – add two tablespoons of salt.

A staple in virtually all kitchen, this cooking ingredient is also great for the laundry room, as its chemical compounds help to set the dye into the fabric.

In the video, the cleaning whizz simply put a generous of the salty mineral in an empty washing machine before chucking in the load.

Before setting up the temperature – a cold wash for the best results – Carolina also suggested using a cupful of quality detergent and a bit of vinegar.

Using vinegar instead of fabric softener not only will soften fabrics without the harsh chemicals found in mainstream washing products but will also prevent static.

For those concerned with the acidic smell of vinegar lingering in your favourite garments, fans of the kitchen ingredient reassured that once rinsed properly, the tang will have evaporated.

Some sceptical, some glad for the tips, viewers took it to comments to tag friends and share their thoughts.

”I’ve used the vinegar on my towels…I find its more natural and makes yr towels soft and you can use vinegar for other things around the house as well…[sic],” one wrote.

A second added: ”I use white vinegar every time I wash towels. Stops them from going crunchy and horrible.”

But not everyone was sold on the vinegar tip, as a critical user pointed out: ”Try to avoid the use of vinegar excessively, because in long term it can damage the pipes.”
