Fresh DNA testing planned for notorious 1987 axe killing of private eye Daniel Morgan

FRESH forensic tests are being carried out on evidence gathered from the notorious axe killing of private eye Daniel Morgan 35 years ago.

The Met Police said it was hopeful the murder of father-of-two Daniel, 37, can still be solved.

New DNA testing technology is being used — including on the Chinese-made axe left embedded in Daniel’s head in a pub car park in Sydenham, South London, in 1987.

His murder was mired in police corruption which the Met conceded was a “major factor” in the failure of the original investigation.

But the force vowed to continue its hunt to find justice for Daniel and his family, saying: “We have not given up on this case. 

“There still remains a possibility of solving this murder. Our work to make that happen will not stop no matter how much time passes.”

The Met is also offering £50,000 for information leading to the conviction of the killers.

However, the force denied accusations in a highly critical report by an independent inquiry panel in June last year that it was “institutionally corrupt.”
