My only son refused to see me on my birthday – he didn’t even buy a card

DEAR DEIDRE: MY only son refused to see me on my birthday.

Instead, he chose to go out with his friends the night before, stay over, and not come home until bedtime.

I ended up having a rotten day, alone – he didn’t even give me a birthday card

He didn’t even give me a birthday card.

I’m a single mother, aged 45, and he’s 22.

As my birthday was on a Sunday, I’d hoped we could do something together – have lunch, go out for tea, maybe see a film.

But I ended up having a rotten day, alone.

He doesn’t work or pay me any rent but I’m happy to support him until he gets a job.

Yet he treats me like a maid, and he can’t even be polite.

I’ve sacrificed so much for him over the years. Now, I’m starting to resent him and I feel unappreciated and unloved.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your son’s behaviour was selfish and hurtful. You need to talk to him and explain why you feel upset.

He’s not a kid any more, and he needs to realise you don’t owe him a living.

He should stop taking you for granted and make an effort.
