Line of Duty stars desperate for series 7 as they ‘don’t want it to end like this’

Line of Duty series six hasn’t even aired on our screens yet and the cast are all desperate to get filming again.

The police drama returns to BBC on Sunday as AC-12 start another investigation into corruption in the force, with newcomer Kelly Macdonald’s character DCI Joanne Davidson in the firing line.

Production on the new season was halted due to the pandemic, with some scenes filmed with strict guidelines in place – meaning it was a different experience to what the stars are used to.

Instead of the social aspect the cast – including Adrian Dunbar (Ted Hastings), Vicky McClure (Kate Fleming) and Martin Compston (Steve Arnott) – are familiar with behind the scenes in Belfast, they all had to stay in bubbles and keep their distance from each other.

Lifting the lid on filming, Adrian told press including Metro.co.uk how ‘tricky’ this was – and how much they want at least one more season as they don’t want to ‘end it like this’.

‘It was very tricky and I think Vicky said something which I would absolutely roll in behind, which is that we can’t really stop now, we’ve got to do another series,’ he said.

‘I mean we’ve all to get on to Jed (Mercurio, creator) and say, “We’ve got to do one that’s not like when we were in lockdown.”

‘We’ve got to do one where we’re back on the ground, we’re out there, we’re in the city, we’re having fun. It’s a great city to have fun in, Belfast, and so you really want to get back to doing that again.

‘But, at the same time, we really felt privileged and lucky that we were able to complete the series, and that it’s going to go out this year.’

Someone get Jed on the phone, ASAP.

Co-star Martin agreed, explaining that there is ‘always’ space for new episodes as the writer leaves a couple of things dangling.

‘I think Jed always took each series one by one because he wants to judge the reaction of the audience,’ he said of a possible new series. ‘Right now, it could end and we could come back.

‘But as I think we’ve alluded to before, just on a personal level, it would be a shame to end it this way. We’ve said it’s such a sociable job and us all hanging out together has become such a big aspect, we’re such close friends, and I’ll include Jed in that.

‘I think it’d be a shame to go that way, but definitely with Jed as well, there’s always potential for it to go on. We could always start a new case.

‘There’s always corruption out there, as he would say, but at the same time where there’s a lot of big questions getting answered in this series, there’s always loose ends.

‘He always leaves something dangling for you, whether that’s just a look from Adrian at the end of a series, which might mean something, might not mean something…

‘There’s always something at the end of it, that you think. “All right, it could go on”.’

The first official trailer for series six dropped recently, and placed Kate firmly in the spotlight with one scene showing a tense stand-off between the AC-12 crew.

From this tiny snippet alone, fans have become convinced that this means she is secretly H, the mystery crimelord in the force that the officers have been searching for.

Refusing to be drawn on what this could mean for her character, Vicky admitted that it would be a ‘shame’ if the series ended now, stating she would be ‘really sad’ if there were no more episodes on the way.

‘It’d be a massive shame, I’m the same…,’ she added. ‘When that day comes, because nothing lasts forever, it will be a really sad time. It’s the longest standing job that I’ve ever had.

‘As cheesy and as corny, as cliche as it sounds, there is nothing nicer than working with mates. Knowing when you go into work that you’re working with people that know you…

‘Life happens when you’re at work, people might pass away, things happen, things go on and when you’ve got your mates to keep you going when you’re at work, that’s pretty important to me. So, it will be a bloody great shame.

‘I’ll keep going until I’m told to not…’

Seeing as how viewers have got their suspicions of Kate, that day may be coming soon…

Line of Duty series six kicks off on Sunday, at 9pm, on BBC. Series one to five are available to catch up on BBC iPlayer.
