Dr Pimple Popper has been working her magic again, this week removing a giant ‘memory foam’ cyst from a man’s head.
James arrived in her surgery with a lump on the side of his forehead on Thursday’s show. The 46-year-old father-of-two explained how he had been burdened with it for more than 16 years.
‘It was just a very small bump. At first I was kind of worried about it, but I spoke to a doctor at a clinic and he told me it was nothing to worry about. But five, six years ago it tripled in size to the point it’s at now.’
As the lump continued to grow it put pressure on his right eye. He said: ‘Multiple times a day you’ll think I’m wiping my eye, but I’m actually just putting pressure against the lump, hoping I can keep it from going into my eye.’
James said he worried about his family and the implications the lump could have on his health.
‘It’s not a good feeling when somebody tells me that they’re worried about me living or dying, because of something that I could have done.’
James has his lump examined after arriving to see Dr Sandra Lee in California.
‘I notice what’s kind of interesting about it is when you push on it it’s sort of like memory foam,’ she said. ‘I see lots of cysts and lipomas on the forehead, and usually they’re more bouncy or they’re more tense or more rubbery, I’ve never felt one that feels like memory foam.’
Explaining her concerns, she added: ‘If it’s a fluid, like a yellowish fluid or something, I would probably not continue. I don’t want to scare you or anything like that, but what if it’s cerebral spinal fluid that coats our spinal cord and around our brain.’
Rather than cutting the lump open, Dr Sandra extracts some of the contents using a needle.
‘Thankfully, it doesn’t look like there is any liquid coming out. Now I’m drawing out a sample with a syringe and the contents is so thick that it is clogging up the needle,’ she said.
By removing a small amount of the lump, she discovers it is a cyst and the procedure can continue.
‘I now know that this bump is a cyst, and it’s not fluid from the brain, so that’s a good thing. It’s still a weird cyst, it has this very weird texture. You push on it, and your imprint of your finger stays there and slowly creeps back. I’ve never seen that before.’
Thick gunge came from the lump, and it was also revealed that the contents were filled with hair.
‘Maybe you could have a little dermoid cyst,’ Dr Sandrah said. ‘I’m squeezing out this cyst and the first thing I notice is that it’s filled with hair. Dermoid cysts really develop during foetal development. A dermoid cyst can contain hair, it can contain skin, it can contain teeth or bone, even.’
Seeing himself after the lump was removed, James said: ‘I see a new person. I have a 13 year old daughter who has never seen me without a lump on my head and I’m going to go home and she’s going to see it.’
Meanwhile, Dr Sandra recently tackled a golf ball-sized ball on the back of a man’s head, fearing the cyst ‘squirting’ at her.
Dr Pimple Popper airs at 10pm on Thursdays exclusively on TLC and is available to stream on discovery+.
