The Russian has created a storm in the world of MMA. Initially, the lack of knowledge about him and his striking resemblance to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s appearance and fighting style brought him into the conversation for title contenders. ‘The Borz,’ however, through his dominating performances in all of his UFC fights, has now arrived one step closer to a title shot.

Facing Gilbert Burns this April 9th, Khamzat Chimaev is coming in as a majority favorite. Olympic wrestler and former UFC double champ Daniel Cormier talked about the Russian in an interview with the Youtube channel MMAFightingonSBN. Talking about his fighting potential, this is what Cormier had to say.

Khamzat Chimaev: Forged from the heart of the Russian Tundra

“I think he’s the scariest contender we have seen for a while, and look. The odds may seem high, but when you look at the odds, you ask yourself do you believe he wins? Maybe he doesn’t dominate, but at the end of it, do you think he wins the fight against Gilbert burns? And when you’re asking yourself that and you say yeah, I think so, it doesn’t matter if the odds are minus 100….” Stated Cormier.

He continued, “And because they believe he’s going to win and they think he’s going to win impressively, they make it to where you have to risk so much in order to make anything on him. But if you think he’s going to win that fight which a lot of people do, then the odds don’t really matter. But I do believe he’s the most scary uh contender we’ve had for a while. Because there are just so many unknowns.”

Daniel Cormier believes that Khamzat Chimaev’s mysterious aura is something that places him apart from everyone else. The ‘unknown’ variable about Chimaev seems to be his selling point in being intimidating to other opponents in the UFC.

UFC 273 is a special fight for Chimaev as it poses a true challenge for him since his time in the UFC. The showdown against Gilbert Burns will truly determine the might and grit that the Russian has.
