Aljamain Sterling Wins Controversial Split Decision Grudge Rematch Against Petr Yan at UFC 273 Amidst Boos

UFC 273 delivered big time. After Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev put on a Fight of the Year contender, the bantamweight unification bout took the stage to entertain the MMA fans. Both Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling put on a crazy bout that saw Sterling win a hard-fought split decision win.

Petr Yan with the loss fell to 16-3 and Aljamain Sterling improved to 21-3.

The bout started with Sterling using his kicks and Yan took the measured approach. Yan was able to stuff the early takedown from the champion, Sterling. It was a close round.

In the second round, Sterling finally took down Yan and immediately took his back. Sterling put Yan in position, the Russian has not been inside the Octagon. Sterling dominated the round and perhaps took a 10-8.

Even in the third round, Sterling, after struggling in the beginning, took down the interim champion. Sterling did what he does best on the ground and took the back and controlled Yan till the end of the round.

In the fourth round, Yan showed his wrestling prowess at the beginning of the round. Later on in the round, Sterling took down the back of Yan, but this time Yan was able to reverse the position and take the top control, and won the round.

Going to the fifth, the bout was even with a potential 2-2 scorecard; In the final round, Sterling gave his all to take down Yan after Yan landed some good shots to begin the round. Later in the round, Sterling was holding on to Yan’s back, but the Russian was not letting Sterling put him down.

The champion was relentless in his approach to putting the fight on the mat.

Sterling won the fight by split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47).

Pet Yan and Aljamain Sterling had a run-in before the bout

The two top bantamweight fighters do not like each other. The conclusion of their first bout created a rift between the two as Yan thought Sterling was acting and Sterling coined Yan as a dirty fighter.

Thus, the two feuded on social platforms whenever they got a chance. Even in their interviews leading up to the fight, the two indicated their hate towards each other. Likewise, both teams when met each other ahead of the fight had a little intense moment.

These two are the absolute best in their weight class and have age on their side. Hence, a trilogy bout down the line is inevitable.
