Kate Garraway has revealed the ‘devastating’ moment her husband Derek Draper said he ‘couldn’t go on’.

Derek, 53, has been in hospital for a year after contracting coronavirus before then being placed in an induced coma. He was eventually free of Covid-19 but the disease had wreaked havoc on his body, leaving him with various health issues including holes in his heart and lungs.

In her upcoming documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, the Good Morning Britain presenter opens up about how Derek’s battle has impacted his mental health with him telling her he couldn’t go on.

She says in a clip seen by The Mirror: ‘Derek had been drifting in and out of consciousness and when he said that, it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me he was still in there.

‘Even though it was terrible to think his spirits were so low.’

Kate, 53, told the publication that Derek has lost eight-stone during his year in hospital and has ‘changed’.

‘Derek is physically very affected. His legs are like sticks, he has no muscle left. In terms of his movement, he’s physically affected,’ she said.

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star also opened about her family’s ordeal during her appearance on The One Show last week.

She said: ‘Coronavirus is horrific, the deaths are horrific, but it isn’t just that, there’s a whole group of people trapped where the damage is so great, where they’re not sure they can get their life back, and that’s where Derek is.

‘Derek is an extreme case, he has a prolonged disorder of consciousness. There was reaction, before Christmas there was progress with words and communication.

‘I feel like I’m on a lifeboat and he keeps coming up, there are moments where he bubbles up and it feels like you have to feel him with positivity or he’s gonna sink down.’

Elsewhere in the documentary, Kate is seen screaming ‘I miss you, Derek’ in a moment of despair.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
