‘Didn’t Want to Listen to My Advice’- Mother on Handling Coco Gauff During Her Adolescence
Coco Gauff, the American tennis ace, is the youngest player to be in the top 100 and has already achieved a ranking as high as world no. 15 in WTA. Gauff’s future seems promising, but let’s talk about the efforts that went into her making.
Besides her own dedication, what played a major role in the shaping of the 18-year-old champion is her parent’s hard work? Recently, Corey and Candi Gauff, the parents of Coco Gauff, spoke about the upbringing of the young blood.
What Does Candi Have to Say About Her Daughter, Coco Gauff?
While speaking for an interview, tracking the entire journey of Gauff since she held the racket for the first time till now, Candi Gauff gave shared some details. Candi said, “In the beginning, I would watch her practice, take notes, and just listen to what some of the coaches were saying. And then I relayed the information to Corey. But as Coco became a teenager, she didn’t want to listen to my advice as a coach.”
Further, she spoke about how she took other responsibilities and let the tennis part be covered by her husband and Coco’s father, Corey. She said, “I backed away and let only my husband give that kind of advice. I became mainly the mom. To raise her and making sure that she is doing her school work, developing friendship and having a social life. And just answering some things that a young lady would want to know.”
Both Corey and Candi Gauff have sports backgrounds. Corey is a former basketball player of Georgia State University and Candi Gauff used to be a track and field athlete at Florida state university.
Why Is Gauff So Special?
Coco Gauff is turning some heads with her splendid tennis performances. The teenager has challenged mega players such as Sakkari, Halep, and even the current world no.1 Iga Swiatek. However, it is easier said than done. Playing against players of such a high caliber can be tormenting. Even so, Coco plays her game with utter resilience and has a powerful mechanism to cope with such situations.
