Iga Swiatek Matches Legendary Serena Williams in the Most Iconic Feat of the Decade

Iga Swiatek is in a sensational form so far this season. After winning three back-to-back Masters 1000 titles, the Pole is now just a win away from claiming the Stuttgart Open final. Following her win over Ludmilla Samsonova in the semifinal in Stuttgart, Switaek extends her winning streak to 22 matches since Qatar Open.

Interestingly, after beating Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinal on Friday, the 20-year-old joined Serena Williams in a unique record.

Before dropping the opening set in the semifinal against Samsonova, Swiatek lost her last set back in March, at the Indian Wells Masters. She lost the opening set against Angelique Kerber in her Round-of-16 clash in the Californian desert.

Thereafter, the Pole did not drop a set till her semifinal clash in Stuttgart, winning a whopping 28 sets in a row. In the process, Swiatek joined Serena Williams to hold a record for the longest streak of winning consecutive sets in the past decade.

An incredible feat of winning 28 sets in a row includes her run to the Miami Masters 1000 title without dropping a set and the Billie Jean Cup qualifying ties.  By winning Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters earlier this Spring, she just became the fourth woman to achieve the ‘Sunshine Double’. In the process, following Ashleigh Barty’s retirement from the sport, Swiatek rose to the top spot in the WTA rankings earlier this month.

Entering the tournament as the top seed, Swiatek received a bye in her first round. She started her tournament campaign with a second-round win over Germany’s Eva Lys. In the quarterfinals, she beat the 2021 US Open champion, Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-4. Despite losing a set, her first since March, Swiatek regrouped and bounced back to beat Samsonova 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5 to reach her fourth final of the 2022 season.

In the final, Iga Swiatek will lock horns against the third-seed, Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
