‘Massively Damage the Propaganda’ – Another Ukrainian Tennis Player Joins the Chant to Support Wimbledon’s Ban on Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev

Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players is getting mixed reactions from fans and tennis entities. However, most of the entities who have voiced their opinion believe that it is unfair. Whereas Ukrainian players such as Elina Svitolina have spoken in favor of the decision. Thus, many believe that Ukrainian players are just channeling their anger upon players of those nations. Therefore, Illya Marchenko took the initiative of explaining the Ukrainian perspective.

Since February, Ukrainian players have been sensitive and outspoken. In contrast to that, Russian and Belarusian players kept silent for quite some time. And only spoke when pushed by the media. Thereby, irking the Ukrainians.

Illya Marchenko Shares the Mindset of Ukrainian Tennis Players

Marchenko addressed how the Russian players are a part of propaganda. He said, “One of the most important Propaganda is and always was sports. It relies on the success of Russian players to show the superiority of their nation. That’s why Kremlin reacted immediately after news from Wimbledon.”

He spoke about the value of players in the eyes of the government of the respective countries. Further, He highlighted the fact that their silence is only fueling the citizen who follows them to take part in the conflict. He said, “All Russian athletes are influencers with huge fanbase if they all start condemning Russia. It will massively damage the propaganda.”

Why Aren’t the Justifications Enough ?

The Ukrainian tennis ace explained why the reasoning given by Russian and Belarusian players isn’t enough. Although Marchenko acknowledged their fear, he countered its seriousness by saying, “I don’t think Russians are ready to punish the famous people just yet. So I guess the risk is there. But it’s not as huge as it’s pictured.” Thereafter, Illya Marchenko backed his argument by giving an example of Russian Tv stars who raised their voice against the brutality and are still walking free.

Further, he also mentioned Aleksander Lesun, the only player who has denounced the actions of these countries. Lesun plays under the Russian flag. And has gifted Russia with 4 modern pentathlon gold medals. Besides that, he also bagged the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
