Your iPhone photos app has THREE huge secrets – and you’re hiding photos wrong

ANYONE with an iPhone needs to check their Photos app immediately – it’s got some seriously clever tricks.

We’ve unearthed some of the coolest iPhone Photos features you need to know about.

Search for ANY photo

You can find any photo in your camera roll in seconds, if you know how.

It’s thanks to the iPhone Search function, which uses powerful computer image analysis to work out what’s going on in your photos.

So you can search for specific terms like “lake”, “dog” or “cheese”.

TAPPING IN

Your iPhone has a ‘secret tap’ screen trick – and it makes WhatsApp much better

And just as if you were searching on Google Images, you’ll be able to find relevant photos in your own reel.

If you’ve had an iPhone for a while, you likely have thousands – or even tens of thousands – of photos.

So searching through these manually can be an absolute nightmare.

Instead, just try searching for a key term in the app to narrow it down.

Apple has built dedicated machine learning into the Photos app to recognise scenes and objects.

You can even search for specific events, like a concert that you went to.

“Photos for iOS can use the time and location of your photos along with online event listings to find matching photos,” Apple explained.

“It’s also possible to search by location.

So you can enter a place name like London to track photos of your trip to the UK capital.

You can also use the Look Up feature to identify features in a photo.

For instance, if you’ve taken a photo of a dog, Look Up can sometimes reveal the dog breed.

If Look Up is available, simply tap the “i” symbol at the bottom of the screen to show more information.

Hiding your hidden photos

Your iPhone has two tricks to hide your photos – and using both is important.

Maybe you’re trying to hide screenshots of a birthday present, weight loss progress photos, or something more intimate.

Whatever the case, remember that you can not only hide photos but conceal the iPhone’s Hidden folder itself too.

So you get double the protection from nosy pals.

“When you hide photos and videos, they move to the Hidden album, so they don’t appear in your Library, in other albums or in the Photos widget on your Home Screen,” Apple explains.

“With iOS 14, you can turn off the Hidden album, so the photos are completely hidden.

“You can unhide photos and videos and turn the Hidden album back on whenever you like.”

To hide Photos, choose an image and then tap the Share button – which looks like an arrow rising from a box.

Then choose the option to hide the photo or video.

You can also select multiple photos and hide them all at once.

To unhide the image, simply follow the same steps but select unhide.

The Hidden album is on by default, and is under the Albums tab in Photos – right near the bottom.

You can turn it off by going into Settings, tapping Photos, scrolling down and disabling Hidden Album.

Your hidden photos will remain hidden, but they won’t be visible in the Photos app.

If you were particularly paranoid, you could move the Photos app from your Home Screen.

But the Photos app will always remain installed on your device, and can easily be searched.

Translate foreign languages

Your iPhone can instantly translate any foreign-language sign.

It’s a lifesaver if you’re trying to navigate a country where you don’t speak the language.

Maybe you want to scan a French restaurant menu, or a notice in a German museum, or the ingredients in a cocktail in Spain.

Take a photo and then find it in your Photos app.

Now hold your finger down and drag your finger over the text.

Use this to highlight the text just like you would in a document.

Now tap Translate on the pop-up menu that appears above the text.

It will automatically translate the text to English (or another language of your choice).

You can copy the translation or change the language using settings.

And you can even get the iPhone to speak the English translation to you out loud.
