Las Vegas Raiders Appoint New England Patriots’ Dynasty OC As New Head Coach

In preparation for the NFL-2022 season, the Las Vegas Raiders have hired Josh McDaniels to be their new head coach. On Monday, the Raiders made an official announcement about the signing. McDaniels will replace Rich Bisaccia, the interim head coach for the Raiders.

Josh McDaniels is ready to take over as Raiders’ Head Coach from the 2022 NFL season. This NFL season, McDaniels served as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. In 2018, he was offered to be the head coach of Indianapolis Colts, which he accepted but later declined. Finally, after serving several years as an offensive coordinator in the league, he is keen to take on the role of the head coach.

On the very same day, Raiders also announced that Dave Ziegler will be the new general manager. McDaniels and Ziegler have a history of working together, as Ziegler was the director of player personnel for the Patriots for nine years.

Evidently, the Raiders organization is still seeking the Head Coach-General Manager coordination that has been their playing style in the past.

Las Vegas Raiders Formula: The Head Coach-General Manager alliance

In October 2021, the Raiders’ Jon Gruden resigned as the head coach after being accused of using anti-gay, misogynistic, and racist language in emails. The Raiders named assistant coach Rich Bisaccia as interim head coach upon Gruden’s resignation.

The Raiders finished the season 10-7 after losing to the Bengals in the NFL postseason. The Bengals defeated the Raiders 26-19 in the Wild Card Playoffs round. Mike Mayock, the Raiders’ GM, was sacked two days after the Wild Card victory over the Bengals. The franchise recruited GM Mayock to work with Gruden, but he was fired in October. Therefore, GM Mayock’s firing was unavoidable after Gruden’s dismissal.

 Who is Josh McDaniels?

McDaniels has a reputation as a popular offensive coordinator around the league. McDaniels joined the New England Patriots in 2001 and served the team for 8 years until 2008. In 2009, he was hired as head coach of the Denver Broncos.

Nevertheless, his time with the Broncos was short-lived as he was fired in 2010 after a 3-9 record in that season. Following that, St. Louis Rams hired him as the offensive coordinator. However, during the 2011 postseason, Patriots recruited him again. Over his two stints with the Patriots, which spanned over 17 years (non-consecutive), he helped the team to 6 Super Bowl victories.

Now that he is joining the Raiders organization as head coach, it will be interesting to see what he can offer.
