Ethel Cain’s new album Perverts has left fans spooked as many insist they feel like they are in a ‘horror movie’ after listening.
The 26-year-old singer also known as Hayden Anhedönia, best known for her hit songs Crush and American Teenager, has shocked and delighted fans with her new album Perverts.
The singer’s album was released on January 8, following the release of the lead single Punish on November 1, 2024.
The album of nine songs is of the southern gothic genre and is an experimental ambient project that moves away from the sound of her previous folk, indie-rock style.
While many have praised the album, her fans have agreed that it is certainly a spooky offering from the singer as many insist that they are ‘petrified’ after listening to the album and unable to sleep.
‘This new Ethel Cain album kinda feels like listening to a horror movie I’m kinda scared (in the best way possible),’ said arianacovid on X.
‘Heart thumping listening to perverts by Ethel Cain, might not sleep tonight tbh,’ said ROMANTlCGETAWAY on X
‘I need the toilet but the new Ethel Cain album has petrified me into thinking my house is infested with demons,’ said liamdelswiftt.
‘So scared of this Ethel Cain album rn let me put the pen down and turn the lights on,’ said cancerficationn.
‘I don’t know how to explain it but I feel like I’m in Silent Hill when I’m listening to Perverts by Ethel Cain,’ said xoYelrah.
Despite the outpouring of fear from fans, the reaction was still overwhelmingly positive as people praised her daring new sound and called her a ‘musical genius’.
‘Everyone saying they’re scared listening to perverts… Ethel Cain, you are a musical genius,’ said ilikecowboyslol.

Reviews have been mixed for the star’s latest offering with The Guardian saying of the album: ‘Sounds akin to pink noise churn and hiss in the background; atonal synths and feedback intermittently blast and howl, drone and scrape, low in the mix; Anhedönia’s spoken word vocals are usually rendered incomprehensible with effects and distortion.
‘When they aren’t, you rather wish they were: Masturbator, she keeps repeating on the 12-minute title track. An atmosphere of oppressive, unsettling gloom is very effectively conjured.’
The singer’s last album Preacher’s Daughter was released in 2022 and received huge critical acclaim and a cult following from fans online.
The album was selected to appear on many albums of 2022 rundowns including Dazed, The Guardian, and Billboard’s top picks.
